IBJ Letters To The Editor

Thank you for [columnist Tom Harton’s] well-thought-out piece in [the April 26] edition on Health by Design. As Kim Irwin noted, this coalition is primarily aimed at obesity prevention. While we recognize it’s long-term work, better community design is the only way to assure our population is able to be more physically active. After decades of teaching, incentivizing, scaring and coaching people to exercise, we’ve come to realize exercise has to be incidental to life.

I appreciate your overture to Health by Design and for bringing the work of this group to the fore in your column.

Chronic disease coordinator
Marion County Health Department
