INDOT lays off 30 employees in budget move

The Indiana Department of Transportation has laid off 30 employees at its headquarters in what Gov. Mitch Daniels says is a rare case of forced job losses to reduce the state's work force.

The layoffs were in several programs and employment categories. The department has about 3,840 employees.

The layoffs were the result of "organizational realignments that have been in progress for several months," the department said in a news release.

"These efforts are targeted to successfully complete INDOT's daily tasks at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers," it said.

Gov. Mitch Daniels said Saturday that the layoffs were "one of the very, very few involuntary reductions" that Indiana government has had to make to cut spending.

State government has been cutting the number of its employees for six years, mainly by not filling jobs of people who leave voluntarily, Daniels said.
