Report: ExactTarget mulling 200-person Atlanta office

Indianapolis digital marketer ExactTarget Inc. is considering creating a 200-employee regional headquarters in Atlanta, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported Thursday.

An unnamed source told the publication that the office would be the company’s largest operation outside of Indianapolis. The company also considered Chicago and Charlotte, N.C., for an expansion, according to the newspaper.

A spokeswoman for 1,600-employee ExactTarget declined to comment on the matter. Atlanta economic development officials did not immediately respond to voice mails from IBJ Friday morning.

The reach into Georgia would follow ExactTarget’s $95.5 million purchase last year of Atlanta-based marketing automation firm Pardot LLC.

ExactTarget also snagged iGoDigital in Indianapolis for $21 million last year. The deals have helped make the company an attractive buyout target, analysts believe.

The company has invested heavily in its own growth over the past year, choosing to take net losses in the short term so it can focus on research and development and expanding its operations.

ExactTarget announced Thursday that it would open an office in Singapore. A spokeswoman would not provide the cost of the expansion or how many people would work there. The firm also has international offices in France, Germany, Sweden, Brazil, Australia and the United Kingdom, and domestic offices in New York City, San Francisco and Seattle.

Proceeds from its $161 million initial public offering in March 2012 have offset some of the growth costs.

The stock has since struggled to gain momentum. Shares closed Thursday at $20.06 apiece, down more than 18 percent from a year earlier. But the company’s analysts have high expectations for the stock’s performance after a full year of trading.
