WISH-TV canceling Ahern talk show after 2-year run

A 30-minute talk show hosted by retired WISH-TV Channel 8 anchor Mike Ahern is coming to an end, about 2-½ years after it was launched.

“Mike Ahern: One on One” adopted a format akin to "Larry King Live," with Ahern interviewing newsmakers such as racing legend Bobby Unser, astronaut David Wolf and Gov. Mike Pence.

It typically aired Sunday mornings on WISH and followed the 10 p.m. newscast Thursdays on sister station WNDY-TV Channel 23. Its last airing is scheduled for Sept. 5.

“We determined that long-form programming just doesn’t work as it once did,” WISH/WNDY spokesman Scott Hainey said of the decision to cancel the show.

Ahern’s show replaced "Access Hollywood," which will return to the 10:30 slot on Thursdays.

WISH will continue to look for opportunities to feature Ahern, he added.

Although Ahern’s show is ending, WISH is committed to locally produced programming in addition to newscasts, Hainey said. WISH produces the city’s only lifestyle TV show, "Indy Style." Running weekday mornings, "Indy Style" is hosted by Andi Hauser and Tracy Forner.

WISH/WNDY also has a full platter of high school sports games, Butler basketball and coverage of events such as the 500 Festival Parade and the Mini Marathon.

Locally produced shows can be cheaper than buying syndicated programming, although the trick is to generate sufficient local advertising.

Ahern, now in his early 70s, retired from WISH in 2004 after working 37 years at the CBS affiliate. Often likened to the Walter Cronkite of Indianapolis TV, Ahern co-anchored the station’s evening newscast with Debby Knox, who continues to work at the station.

  • dearth
The problem is a lack of local guests that people would be interested in to interview.
  • Thank Goodness!
    Less news, more garbage!
  • Mike Ahern
Show was good at start with great guest but now it helps me fall asleep at night. Still thing Mike and Howard were the best news people Indy has ever produced.
  • Too Bad
This is too bad. I mildly enjoyed catching this program when I could. I did think Mike's questions were too softball, which lead to some bland tv. It was similar to how meet the press has become. Prior, Russert would ask respectful but piercing questions critical a viewers ability to develop a full opinion. Now, Gregory seems to have platform full of talking points (no different than a press release). Best of Luck to Mike in his next effort. If he enjoyed this work, he should continue on the internet.

  5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
