Columnist Kravitz dropped from radio show

Indianapolis Star sports columnist Bob Kravitz is out as co-host of the afternoon show on WFNI-AM 1070 The Fan, effective immediately.

Emmis Communications Corp. on late Monday afternoon announced its decision to drop Kravitz, but keep Eddie White in the 3-6 p.m. time slot the duo had occupied since January 2008.

“After much deliberation, we have decided to have a single-host afternoon show with multiple contributors,” said Charlie Morgan, local market manager for Emmis, in a prepared statement. “This is a business decision based on both product goals and financial performance of the station.”

Kravitz’s departure from The Fan, a sports talk station, follows other changes Emmis announced on Friday involving several on-air personalities at its Indianapolis radio stations.

Morgan told IBJ on Friday that Kravitz and White, a former Reebok executive, would continue in the afternoon timeslot. But Kravitz’s contract expires April 7, and it was widely expected in the local radio station that he would be let go.

John Vincent, better known as JMV, the former host of “The Drive with JMV” on WNDE 1260 AM, still is considered by local radio sources as a potential replacement for Kravitz.

Kravitz has agreed to remain involved with the show as a contributor, although he's a bit miffed by the decision.

"It's disappointing and a little bit odd given the ratings we've produced, but I understand the decision," he said. "Business is business. They want it to be a one-man show, not two. I'm proud of everything that we did."

Meanwhile, the lineup on The Fan has undergone a severe makeover.

IBJ reported on Friday that “Big Joe” Staysniak has left as co-host of the WIBC-FM 93.1 morning show and will begin his own sports program from 10 a.m. to noon beginning early April on the Fan. Staysniak played in two Super Bowls as a member of the Buffalo Bills before finishing his pro career with the Indianapolis Colts.

His arrival shuffles former Indiana University basketball star and coach Dan Dakich to The Fan's noon-to-3 p.m. timeslot, which now is mostly occupied by the syndicated “The Herd With Colin Cowherd.”

Steve Simpson, who occupied an afternoon time slot on WIBC, has replaced Staysniak as co-host of the WIBC morning show with Terri Stacy.

Simpson’s afternoon shift on WIBC has been filled by Ed Wenck, who left the “Wank & O'Brien” morning show he had hosted with Dave O’Brien on WLHK, a country station also known as Hank. Wenck and O'Brien have been on-air partners for 14 years. O’Brien will continue hosting the morning show.

  • Former Listener
I was an avid listener when K&E were on air. Sorry but since Kravitz left the EW show stunk and JMV is a horrible talk show host. If i wanted to listen to a boring program by a pompous host I would watch 60 minutes. I think you should have left the show as was with good ratings and dedicated listeners instead of ruining the drive home for everyone.
  • changed my dial
I really liked Kravitz and thought he added a lot to the show. to bad he is no longer on show. no longer listen to eddie, moved over to MPOS. patrick is entertaining to listen to and has good guests. Really enjoy Dakich when I can catch him in the afternoon. I also download interviews from MPOS website and Dakich website to catch the good interviews I miss during their shows.
  • Get rid of White
White is a pompous rambler that adds no value. Between him and Steven A Smith their shows will never be heard on my radio. Bring back Czabe on WNDE and bring in JMV at WFAN in the 3-6 with DD right before.
  • Keep DD and Colin
I'm a female listener, and only gave sports radio a chance because of DD. I love his show, and you've kept me as a regular listener for over 2 years with Dakich and Colin back to back. Keep them both on the air in Indy!
  • Kravits
I enjoyd Kravits and I think his departure is a bad decision. JMV stinks. He is not that good PLEASE do not bring him on with Eddie
  • Need a complete replacement
Bring in Greg Rakestraw, the best sports show host in town after Kevin Lee
  • Lost a Fan
I stopped listening to JMV once he took over for MPOS full time. Kravitz and Eddie have occupied my afternoon commute since they began. The old fashion and mundane rantings of a single host has past its prime. Bring back the always controversial Kravitz; whose articles, luckily, still grace our local paper!
  • JMV
JMV is the closest thing to an imbecile I've heard on a radio show since the last time I listened to Howard Stern. He can't talk, can't listen, and I wonder if he can even read. He may be a good person, but he needs to chose another profession-- perhaps something less demanding of his intellect.
  • Make some more changes
Please let Eddie go and get JMV to host. MPOS is not very good either. They are both too full of them selves.

JMV would be a slam dunk for the FAN.
    • Bad Shake Up
I have to say I really did enjoy Kravitz & Eddie together. When listening to them, I thought Eddie was a rambler, but made the show 'fun'. Kravitz just seemed to bring the show down. But after listening to the show now, I really can't stand Eddie by himself. The show has lost ANY of the luster it had before. The shake up has gone all wrong! Put DD in from 3-6! That would be way better. The move as-is, is just a terrible move.
    • White is weak
The has pretty much been the Eddie White show for a while. Kravitz could barely get a word in whith White's rambling. I think a better move would have been to keep Kravitz and team him with someone else. White is not very good. I don't think Kravitz is God's gift to radio, but at least he seemed credible.
    • COULDN'T AGREE MORE
Eddie White is the worst thing on the radio and Indy's afternoon sports talk (3-6) is AWFUL overall. JMV was a great listen. Kravitz AND Eddie were/are as annoying as it gets. Step it up, Indy. Get some personalities. When JMV was let go, there was a show on from California (I think) with some younger guys. It was fun AND insightful. It was only on for a week or two until they put M(POS) on....emphasis on the POS..... I also agree that the stations have totally lost touch with the public based on the garbage they put on the radio (Emmis especially - 1260's weakest timeslot is 3-6 but is otherwise very strong IMHO). DD at 3-6 would be great and was what I was hoping for with the big switch-up. But if they bring back JMV, that's a pretty strong 1-2 punch in the afternoon.
    • Eddie White is HORRIBLE
I think I am in the minority that likes Cowherd. I dont mind the scheduling changes except for keeping Eddie. The next time he asks a tough question, it'll be the first. He is a rambling fool. Hopefully this decision was made because of timing of contracts and ultimately JMV will takeover the time slot completely and Eddie will be gone as soon as his contract expires. Does anyone know when that is?
    • New Lineup sux
I used to listen to JMV on 1260....couldnt stand Kravitz and Eddie. I quit the afternoon sports talk and went to ipod after 1260 lost JMV....MPOS is so full of himself, cant listen to that. Put Dakich at the 12-3 slot, get rid of Eddie and get JMV for 3-6 and you will gain quite a few new listeners.
    • Czabe
Bring back Czabe...He's better than all of these hacks!!
    • Indiana University Basketball Star
      I love Dakich's show...but calling him a star at IU is a slight stretch...now Steve Bouchie...that was a star.

I would say that I listen to 1260, but since I live outside of the 465 loop, cannot get reception...
    • Why Does Eddie Survive?
Reading this board and others, the overwhelming majority do not like Eddie White (me included). If Emmis is trying to rework their programming to attract more listeners - why haven't they paid attention to the fact that Indy sports talk listeners can't stand Eddie White and won't listen to the show with Kravitz gone?

Kravitz always presented himself as news journalist, not a radio personality, with good insights and factual info. Eddie, on the way other hand, presents himself as an emcee on speed who loves ND and doesn't much think about any other sports than college FB.

So now we're stuck in traffic with Fast Eddie or Arrogant MPOS as our 2 choices for drive home sports talk. Thanks for putting your listeners last again, Indy sports radio.

    • still wrong
The only way Emmis can fix this is to move DD to the 3-6 timeslot. White needs to go away completely. Kravitz, while annoying sometimes with the overt attempts to bait the listeners with controversy, is still very insightful and should be given an afternoon slot - pay consistent with the ratings he produces. Team Kravitz with a good nuts and bolts guy at noon and it's a good product.

By the way - Mike and Mike need to go. That bit is extremely tired.
    • Easy Fix
I always listened to JMV anyway...now that Mark Patrick has that show, no chance I would listen to Eddie. No problem...get rid of Eddie, make JMV the host. Kravitz was the better part of the show, although he was not good by any means...just better than Eddie...Emmis is right, the show sucks, they just don't know how to fix it.
    • why Kravitz?
I agree with the other comments. Eddie is so much less insightful (and so more obnoxious)than Kravitz. I only listen b/c Kravitz gives solid opinions even when it's unpopular to the locals. No reason to listen anymore.
    • You have GOT to be kidding
White is a knucklehead who likes to hear himself make noise (& that's all it is). Kravitz was the one with the knowledge. I only endured White so I could listen to Kravitz. It's off my channel lineup.
    • Less Content - Fewer Listeners
If you were going to keep one, why not keep the one that could actually talk? One that didn't blather on and on? One that had rational opinions and kept the show on an even keel? Just because Kravitz doesn't go overboard on Notre Dame (and about every other topic presented) didn't mean that he wasn't the one to keep!
I just stopped listening. There was already too much of Eddie and now, with Kravitz's role being smaller, well, maybe it's time to develop an appreciation for quite while I drive...
    • Awful move
What a terrible move by Emmis! Kravitz was the best part of the show. Eddie White, as a one man show? That is a joke. He is awful. So annoying and lacking in sports intelligence and speaking ability. It's surprising that dope was an exec at Reebok. Kravitz's commentary was insightful, thoughtful, researched, and well spoken. His interview questions were done like a true journalist. White's commentary was lacking in all of the above. Best of luck to Kravitz and I predict the new show will go down in flames. Unless JMV can somehow save it.

    1. So the Mayor adds another non value added layer to having a vehicle towed? Whereby the City Government RECIEVES AN ILLEGAL KICKBACK FROM A LGOISTICS COMPANY THAT SUBS THE WORK TO LOCAL TOW COMPANIES? What is the service the City performs for receiving the "tribute"? This is RICO!!!!! What a corrupt and unnecessary layer. What a dirtbag Mayor and his cronies.

    2. Owner occupied housing. Clear enough?

    3. So people think I am paranoid. It's from experience in dealing with puds requested by developers who make major donations themselves to representatives, have nice fund raisers for those running for office and hide through pac's. then there are the public relation firms. You will note some pr comments below. You there Clyde Lee? My opinion. Commercial along 421, great. Multifamily housing, terrible idea that will change the town. Senior condos or zero lot line homes west, great. I suggest keeping all entries to commercial areas at 421. All entries to owner occupied on sycamore. Will keep the traffic on sycamore down some. Two other things. You can't trust what will be there in 10 years. Steve builds quality stuff, but areas change over time. Look at the changes at the wall mart center at 86th and 421 over the last 10 years. Look at the apartments and neighborhoods behind St Vincent's. Raintree properties WILL decrease in value if commercial and multifamily goes in near. It has already been happening around the bridges area. The houses that have been sold recently are way below market. Several deals not closed due to the Illinois construction and the whole unsurety of the bridges. It's pretty simple, Zionsville will approve the whole thing because the city council has been groomed over a LONG period of time for this. I might even suggest some are in their position as a result of this.

    4. Esta, do you have a dog in this fight? You seem to really want to knock anyone against this project. No, I didn't move to Indiana for the architecture. I moved here for that red barn in the field. The horses and fields of corn. A place that is NOT overdeveloped. There are plenty of nearby places in Indianapolis that could be REDEVELOPED instead.

    5. RKW - OK, we get it, you're paranoid. The question is, are you paranoid enough? Greg - Yes, Pittman(s) is (are) at it again. They are developers, they build things. It's what they do. So when you go to work tomorrow, Greg, you're at it again too. Cliff - Really? You moved to Indiana for its progressive architecture? That's like moving to England for the cuisine. Zionsvillain - The house you moved to was once a field or woods. I'm willing to bet folks were upset when that ground was plowed under and a house was built. But I guess now that you are in, everything should stop? "My house was OK, but the next one is sprawl." SE Guy - Please don't paint us with such a wide brush. Most reasonable Zionsville residents welcome planned, measured development.
