Indiana's largest school district is planning to lay off more than 90 teachers, largely because of the state takeover of four schools starting this fall.

The Indianapolis Public School Board voted Tuesday night to approve the layoffs of 163 employees, including 94 teachers. That is more than the 150 layoffs that the district had projected, but the vote came without debate or protest, according to The Indianapolis Star.

Three district high schools and a middle school that have had years of poor student performance will be run by private operators picked by the state. Those schools are Arlington Community High School, Manual High School, Howe Community High School and Donnan Middle School.

Some teachers at the takeover schools have been offered jobs at other district sites, and some have accepted positions with the school operators. They layoffs also include support staff, custodial and administrative workers.
