Lawmakers plans to renew bill against same-sex marriage

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

A proposal to write Indiana's same-sex marriage ban into the state constitution may be on hold as Republican leaders ponder its fate this year, but the House and Senate sponsors are charging ahead anyway.

Rep. Eric Turner, R-Cicero, said he plans to introduce the measure in the House this year. And Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, has already filed the proposal in the Senate.

Turner was the author of the measure that passed in 2011 by a vote of 70-26 in the House and 40-10 in the Senate. The General Assembly would have to sign off on it again, this year or in 2014, and then send the proposal to voters for final approval.

"We do have some flexibility between this year and next. We recognize that," Turner said. "But frankly, some of us would like to put it behind us and let the public weigh in."

The Supreme Court's decision to take up a pair of cases dealing with gay marriage and employee benefits for same-sex couples has led Republican leaders in both chambers to hold back on making any plans this year.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long, a Fort Wayne Republican, said he is waiting for his staff to review any impact from the Supreme Court before deciding whether to move on the issue this year.

"There's no definitive decision on that as of yet," he said Tuesday.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma, an Indianapolis Republican, pointed out Monday he did not include the ban in a legislative agenda released by House Republicans, but he has also refused to slam the door shut on the issue.

"Why is everybody focusing on this issue?" Bosma asked Monday, the opening day of the 2013 session. "We're here to talk about jobs, the budget, and workforce development and education. I'm sure some of these issues will be discussed, but it certainly wasn't part of our agenda and it wasn't part of the discussion on our part today either."

Turner, a top-ranking Republican in the House, said he understands Long and Bosma will have to work out a timetable, but said he is confident in the support for the ban in the Assembly.

Democrats opened the 2013 session with an effort to place gay marriage and other social issues on hold. House Minority Leader Scott Pelath, a Michigan City Democrat, asked Republicans, who outnumber Democrats 69-31 in the House, to place a two-year moratorium on social issues. But Bosma rejected that request Monday.

  • Where do these Nuts come from?
Eric Turner and Dennis Kruse are bigots. They are an embarrassment to the Repbulican Party and the State of Indiana.
  • Same Sex Marriage Ban
LEGISLATORS: Do not waste any more time on banning same sex marriage.
  • Read Matt Tulley today
I wish every one of our legislators would take 5 minutes and read Matt's well written and enlightened column in today's (Wednesday) Indianapolis Star. It says it all.
  • Embarrassed in Indiana
Just moved back to my home state and now realize why I wanted to leave in the first place. Backwards, Bigoted, and lacking a secular government. Help! I'm still in America, right?
  • Look at our divorce rates
The Republicans say they want to protect traditional marriage, but have they actually looked around to see what that is? I don't know many people who are in a decent, committed, first marriage. Seems like most families today are second, third marriages with children having various step parents and half siblings. Seems to me that the Republicans are simply afraid of homosexuals and trying to pass hate legislation that denies rights to people. Isn't there something in the constitution about that?
  • Be on the right side of history for once
We all know in our hearts and consciences that discrimation in any form is vile and that same sex marriage will one day be a national civil right. History will review the path it took to get there just as we have for the 1960's and the horrific years that we enslaved human beings. We should hope to be on the enlightened side of history, for a change, in Indiana.
  • backward, indeed
Indiana made a great advance last year when it became the first state to have a license plate supporting an organization providing support for LGBT teens - and then our state's senate and house turned right around and reprimanded the organization and took the plates away (but not until I'd gotten two of them). I hope that better judgment prevails. I hope that steps can still be made toward equality - away from this pitiful homophobia. People are people, and the fact that we can love each other is a blessing. Shame on these legislators - two short-sighted men. I hope that this never even comes to a vote. But: I am a Hoosier. I am pro-equality. I am a democrat. And I vote.
  • Our State Legislature---
---the laughing stock of the country. Why don't they work on things that are important to our economy and needs and lay off their dumb ''social agendas''? Indiana is a backwards, bigoted, and holier than thou state who keeps voting in these idiots.
  • Shame
Sorry to see this bigotry coming out of Hamilton County.
  • RIDICULOUS
This is why republicans are losing and losing big. As long as they focus on hate, bigotry, and sanctioning discrimination they will be the minority party. Sad time to be a Hoosier when are leaders are on the wrong side of history.
  • Ridulous
This is such a waste of time. We should be pursuing the exact opposite and looking to legalize gay marriage.
  • Backwards Indiana
Unbelievable, there are way too many other issues to concentrate on than this. The big corporations are against this so why would we pursue this.

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
