Lilly Endowment is adding $1 million to a $3.2 million relief fund that was set up last winter to help people in central
Indiana who have lost their jobs and homes.
"All through this difficult year, Lilly Endowment has been impressed
by the compelling needs of those most affected by the challenges of the current economy," said N. Clay Robbins, president
of the endowment. “While some indicators hint at recovery, relief is far from reality for many who have lost jobs or
homes, or both."
The Community Economic Relief Fund is a collaboration among the endowment and several other
local foundations. Other contributors are the Central Indiana Community Foundation, Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation and Nina
Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. United Way of Central Indiana administers the fund.
United Way reports that the
fund has helped more than 6,000 households in six counties pay for housing, utilities and food. The money has also supplemented
existing hunger-prevention programs.
