The club has reserved one wall of its main dining room for local artists, whom Markowicz will choose to feature on a rotating basis. The club will also host a series of artist receptions for its members and the general public. The "Indiana Artists Series" kicks off June 4 and will feature contemporary landscape painter John Domont and photographer Tom Casalini.
"I’m nowhere near an expert in art—that’s why I have all these brilliant people here to give me guidance," Markowicz said.
He planned the series in conjunction with the Arts Council of Indianapolis, which has published "Buying Indy Art: A Guide for Businesses." The buying guide extends the Be Indypendent campaign for local art to the business community with tips on how to start a workplace art-selection committee and blurbs on businesses that bought local art.
Markowicz has at least one art-buying experience. Last year, the exclusive dining club on the 36th floor of the One America building gave its bistro a contemporary makeover. The room features one of Domont’s large, bright paintings, "In the Afternoon."
More of Domont’s work has been on display—and for sale—in Skyline’s gallery the past six months. After June 4, Skyline will feature Casalini’s photographs for about three months, Markowicz said.
Shannon Linker, director of artist services at ACI, sees the for-profit, invitation-only club as the perfect venue for introducing artists to buyers in the corporate world.
"It is known for business meetings, business deals," she said.
