Union protests at Statehouse on GOP proposals

Several hundred steelworkers hit the halls of the Statehouse on Tuesday to protest what they called an "anti-worker agenda" of the Republican majorities in the Indiana House and Senate.

The future of the bill drawing the strongest ire of the union members remained uncertain as a Republican committee chairman said a decision had not been made on whether so-called right-to-work legislation would be considered this session. Organizers said more than 600 United Steelworkers members from around the state attended Tuesday's event.

Labor unions have opposed a bill moving through the Legislature to fix Indiana's debt-ridden unemployment insurance fund that would reduce jobless benefits for many recipients and soften tax increases on businesses.

The state has borrowed $2 billion from the federal government, and a plan backed by Gov. Mitch Daniels aims to repay that money by 2020 in part with changes estimated to mean a 25-percent reduction in the state's unemployment benefit payments.

Democrats and labor groups also have argued that the right-to-work legislation backed by many Republicans would drive down wages by weakening unions. The bill would prohibit union membership and fees from being a condition of employment.

Pete Trinidad, vice president of Local 6787 at the ArcelorMittal steel mill in Burns Harbor, said members had written hundreds of letters about their concerns that were being given to House Speaker Brian Bosma and other legislators.

"I believe this right to work and state unemployment and things that they're doing isn't about trying to balance the budget — it's about trying to silence labor and for us to not have a voice in the democratic process," Trinidad said.

Rep. Douglas Gutwein, chairman of the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee, said he believed the legislation would help the state's economy, but it might not be acted upon this year with the Legislature dealing with issues such as the state budget and changes to the education system.

"We've got some pretty hot topics right now, maybe this can wait — we'll have to see," said Gutwein, R-Francesville.

Gutwein disputed the argument that Republican legislators were out to hurt workers.

"The bottom line is I think some the measures we're taking are going to create jobs and improve our education system," he said.

Terie Creal of Merrillville, who works for U.S. Steel in Gary, said she was worried that the actions of legislators would end up making working people poorer.

"Our people have worked hard and long," she said. "We don't want to give back our rights."

  • This is an anti-union boss bill
To the extent unions create high wages, they create unemployment, since they soak up available capital, and act as a drag on the companies they leach off of.

To the extent they don't affect wages, they aren't needed.

Automotive manufacturing employees throughout the South have found that you can get great wages, great benefits, safe working conditions, and all with no Union boss breathing down your neck, and the security of knowing you aren't damaging your employer's business capability.

Such companies also make their economies healthy. You want the opposite? Look at Detroit. That's what unionism will get you.

If unions make sense, people will join them voluntarily. If they have to be forced to join, something about the deal stinks. It's that simple.

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
