Indiana legislators back bill for alcohol amnesty law

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

Indiana legislators are nearing agreement on a bill that would shield people from arrest on alcohol charges if they report that someone is intoxicated and needing medical help.

The House voted 96-0 on Tuesday in favor of the bill after a similar version earlier passed the Senate in a 50-0 vote.

Bill sponsor Rep. Jud McMillin of Brookville says the proposal gives immunity from arrest on public intoxication or underage drinking charges to people who act to get help for someone facing an alcohol-related emergency.

Rep. Sheila Klinker of Lafayette says a similar disciplinary policy at Purdue University has helped encourage students to seek out assistance for others.

Legislators must still agree on a final version of the bill before advancing it to the governor for his consideration.

This is probably the smartest thing the legislature has done all session. Good job!
