Indianapolis Speedway exec wins Terre Haute nod

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

Democratic voters in Terre Haute have picked a top executive of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to run against the city's incumbent Republican mayor this fall.

Fred Nation won Tuesday's primary with 69 percent of the vote. He'll face Republican Duke Bennett, who is trying to break a string of four consecutive previous Terre Haute mayors who've lost in re-election bids.

Nation is executive vice president of communications at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He announced his candidacy in December.

Nation, an Indiana State University graduate, has never held a political office, but has considerable roots in politics, serving as press secretary from 1979 to 1980 for U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh and as press secretary for Gov. Evan Bayh from 1989 to 1996.
