Sports talk host JMV lands at Emmis station

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrint

As anticipated, Emmis Communications Corp. has scooped up popular Indianapolis sports-talk radio host John Michael Vincent, better known as JMV, for its afternoon drive slot on WFNI-AM 1070, "The Fan."

JMV's new show, "The Ride," will run weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m starting Monday. Vincent left Clear Channel's WNDE-AM 1260 last fall with no clear next step. The 40-year-old host said Monday morning that after working a hard schedule for two years he wanted to spend more time with his 4-year-old son and newborn daughter.

As IBJ reported earlier this month, Vincent's move to the Fan was widely anticipated in local radio circles because his non-compete clause just recently expired. WFNI station manager Charlie Morgan said the timing, which coincides with Indianapolis 500 race week, couldn't be better. Emmis has exclusive local broadcast rights for the Indy 500 and "the listenership levels are gargantuan," Morgan said.

Morgan said he didn't lure JMV away from WNDE, but, "When he was suddenly no longer a competitor, it became very interesting."

JMV, whose real name is John Michael Gliva, will go head-to-head with Mark Patrick, the host at WNDE. Five years ago, JMV was Patrick's sidekick. Asked whether he anticipates any on-air rivalry, JMV said, "I don't know, I probably will be concentrating on the job at hand."

  • It's not rocket science
Eddie was loud and annoying. He was unprofessional. You just don't walk in and become a talkshow host. JMV is entertaining, knowledgeable and has a following of listeners and advertisers. Kravitz was and is a great guest and co-host. Part of the Kravitz and Eddie upheaval was economic, the other part was keeping listeners. It's not rocket science.
  • Ratings????
Kravitz and Eddie were on a blow torch. I couldn't get JMV west of my Brownsburg home on the piddly station he was on. Is this taken in account? I don't know, but if so, JMV will kill what Eddie and Kravitz was doing
  • $$ is what you're missing
    Toby 12:
Krabby and Eddie were pulling down in excess of $200 grand between them. They'll get JMV for half that.
At NDE, JMV also didn't have the 1070 strength of signal, nor the Emmis marketing might.
    This is a good fit.
  • actually.......
To be fair.....I think Kravitz & Eddie beat JMV once on a station that has 8 times the signal strength and is the home of the Colts & Pacers. JMV also brings in a lot of sponsor $$$. That might ne what you are missing.
  • What a Waste
What a waste of an air slot. Should have kept Kravitz - if money were the issue, why not let someone run the board and Kravitz talk?
It's back to MPOS for me...
  • Interesting Switch
    Somewhat baffling.

So, Eddie White and Bob Kravitz ultimately drew higher ratings vs JMV's radio show when they went head to head, and the FAN then releases Bob K and subsequently Eddie W. Now, they hire the guy who couldn't compete with their Eddie and Kravitz duo.

    I must be missing something?

    1. these guys only skill was to steal from other's hard earned savings.

    2. I voted for him last time and it WAS the LAST time. He needed to to quit running around the world on useless trips, and giving our $$ away to sports teams. I'll vote for anyone but Ballard next time. BTW...we gave $40M to the Pacers and cannot even watch the games on TV.

    3. For the people concerned about traffic, you should know that mixed-use projects (like the one being proposed), actually allows for and encourages more people to walk and bike, thereby mitigating additional automobile traffic. If we continue to design and build suburban-type projects in the City (i.e. automobile-oriented projects), we are not offering anything different from what the suburbs offer, which means we will continue to lose jobs/people to the suburbs. The reason Broad Ripple is somewhat successful today is that people want to live in a place that offers the convenience of being able to walk/bike to restaurants, retail, nightlife, the Monon, etc. Why would you not want to support a project that is complimentary to what already makes the area desirable? The real argument with this project should be its lack-luster design and layout, not the density.

    4. It is unfortunate that there is a perception that celebrities validate an event. The Indy 500 stands on its own, especially for those coming in from out of town. It was always so disturbing to read the gushing descriptions of Ashley Judd threaded throughout the local coverage. Very happy that era is at an end.

    5. Good ole' Obamacare. Thanks liberals and those who didn't bother to vote.
