  1. I do not know what the solution to this is and I doubt the legislators do either, but there is a huge problem with property taxes in Indiana and we need real leadership and courage by all of the involved parties to bring that to bear on the situation. It is getting out of control in some localities and some folks who are retired and on fixed incomes, and many of the poorer homeowners are in a bad place and may be forced to sell their properties in order to survive financially.

    1. There needs to be a huge overhaul. My assessed value is up 40%, but I am not moving, so the real value hasn’t changed.

For these famers, it seems like they have been paying low rates when sales were better, but they didn’t save for a rainy day. Can’t have it both ways.

Its time to start charging property tax on ALL properties. No exemptions, with the exception of entities paid for by tax payers, ie public school, fire house, government buildings, etc.

    2. LOL. David, now do the Pacers and Colts. I’m sure they have been saving for a rainy day to build their next playpens. You’re ready to bring the hammer down on ALL properties Irsay and Simon own, right?

  2. There is no constitutional right to own a home or a farm. If you don’t like to pay fair market taxes (as required by state law), you rent. It’s what millions of people do in all parts of the country.

  3. Pennsylvania has a split-rate property tax that places more emphasis on land value over improvement value. Something along those lines might be more appropriate than the current tax structure.

    1. Hard disagree on this one. This is basically Prop 13 in California and it has been a disaster. Not to mention that it would further incentivize absentee landlords to continue to sit on undeveloped lots and abandoned houses.
