Mickey Maurer Entrepreneur of the Year Award
David Becker
‘Nobody ever told me there was a box’
First Internet Bank is the latest success in long line of entrepreneurial ventures
Before he was 10 years old, David Becker had a job delivering The Indianapolis Times newspaper in the Eagledale neighborhood. When he soon discovered that the more customers he had on his route, the more money he could earn to buy model cars, Becker traded in his Schwinn with the banana seat and high handlebars for a 10-speed so he could distribute additional papers quicker.
Equipped with that level of energy and knowledge as well as sage advice from his grandfather—“Just remember, no matter what happens, they can’t eat you”—an entrepreneur was born.
In the years since, Becker has gone on to found five companies, including Fishers-based First Internet Bank, which now is closing in on $6 billion in assets and employs more than 300. He helped start and seed TechPoint, the initiative to grow central Indiana’s technology sector, is a former chair of the Central Indiana Community Foundation and a board member of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, and is helping build a high school apprenticeship program.
The selection process
Indianapolis Business Journal compiled its annual list of fastest-growing private companies through the following procedures:
Submissions were solicited through announcements in IBJ and by email. Companies are ranked based on their revenue growth over a two-year period.
Companies were eligible if:
◗ Fiscal year 2022 revenue must have been more than $1 million and represent a 12-month year.
◗ Companies must have been founded prior to FY 2022.
◗ Companies must have been privately held, for-profit corporations, proprietorships or partnerships through Dec. 31, 2024 (not a subsidiary or division of a parent company).
◗ Companies must be headquartered on Dec. 31, 2024, in central Indiana. Companies with partial or full ownership outside Indiana are eligible.
Accuracy of entries was verified by letters from the companies’ outside accountants or through the companies’ submitting their tax returns. Entries were reviewed by KSM CPAs & Advisors, the official accounting firm of IBJ’s Fast 25.
