  1. Nuclear SMRs are the future. NuScale already has a system approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). If you are worried about the financial risk liability falling on Indiana ratepayers, let the cloud data center providers trial run one first. They will gladly pay it. Also, I wouldn’t exactly classify this as “unproven technology” when the U.S. Navy has been using nuclear reactors to power our largest ships and subs for 60 years. Indiana has a rare opportunity to jump right over the laughably expensive and inefficient wind and solar debacle and right into a clean efficient technology which would secure our energy production for the next 200 years.

  2. I say let’s do it. Indiana is home to one of the best nuclear engineering schools in the country and we’re aiming to be a massive center for R&D and data centers that require lots of energy. We should be at the epicenter of the nuclear revolution.

  3. @ Christopher T. Yes, absolutely to your comment, ” If you are worried about the financial risk liability falling on Indiana ratepayers, let the cloud data center providers trial run one first. They will gladly pay it.”

Regarding nuclear reactors on submarines, those would be considered “micro” reactors and on a very different level from SMR’s. While some companies are considering commercializing micro reactors it is a very different energy and business proposition than SMR’s.

Regarding risk to rate payers, here is one example: https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/nuscale-small-nuclear-reactor-project-in-idaho-cancelled/
