  1. The opening paragraph of this article perfecting explains what VERY FEW companies do. I’m sitting in my cube right now thinking wow… my job offers none of that and I’ve been here 6 years. What Julia describes at her software startup company is micro niche of society in the working class. Personally, I’m lucky enough to have two remote work days per week. It’s better than zero. Without quitting a position and jumping into the pool not much really “changed” for 75% of the working class. Other than the lack of pay.

  2. “…my job offers none of that and I’ve been here 6 years…”
    .
And do you know why your job doesn’t offer any of that?
    .
It doesn’t have to…and that, in and of itself, is a direct message to you (and your co-workers). It might not be intentional (then again, it might be), but if it’s an oversight, then it means they don’t give a rat’s posterior. And if you & your co-workers started vacating, TPTB (The Powers That Be) would probably start thinking, “why is everyone so ungrateful?” And that should tell you something. If you don’t like what you’re experiencing…leave. There’s only one thing worse than sitting & languishing in a job for 6 years where you are obviously not happy: staying there 6 years and 1 day. Would you rather look for another job now (especially now that remote is in vogue) when there are shortages of people (vs. tremendous shortages of exceptional people) or when the market tightens up?

“The Gold Collar Worker: Harnessing The Brainpower Of The New Workforce”
    .
It’s a take on blue collar vs. white collar vs. gold collar: those who think for a living (e.g. tech, lawyers, etc.). It’s from 1985. I got my copy on the day it hit the market and polished it off the next day in line to get my driver’s license renewed. And a second piece of information – if you don’t like Amazon, take a gander at https://bookfinder.com – it’s “Google for Books” – new and used. Your white collar workers think the business revolves around them, which shows they aren’t very bright, well, perhaps they are bright in one way: they’ve got everyone (including themselves) convinced *they* are the business. Do fans go to ball games (at any level) to see the coaches coach or see the players play? And when MJ was playing or Lebron today had/has a phenomenal season, was/is there a promotion to coach/management? Heck no! They are rewarded with more money!
    .

    1. Phillip, I agree with your statement(s) and yes we ALL KNOW why raises don’t come. I work for The State of Indiana. We have lost so many people throughout our department in the last few years. I’ve applied to other positions but recently paused. My job is stable and provided tons of time off which I use for my REI hustle. I’m uncertain of switching jobs and losing that flexibly. I can make more money with my side “on paper” than I can with my W2, but we all need health insurance, etc. I will for sure read the Gold Collar Worker article! Thank you.
