LETTER: East needs higher incomes

I’d like to see a grocery like Pogues Run Grocer in the Coal Factory building on the east side [New redevelopment plans emerging for stalled Irvington Coal Factory project, IBJ.com, Sept. 22]. Space for stores and restaurants is needed. So that will be welcome. Middle-income housing is needed on the east side.

We already have a plethora of low-income housing and resources. We need more middle-income families to provide a balance and help keep businesses going. I’m not a NIMBY. I support many of the resident food banks, social services, halfway houses, and homeless shelters in the area. A halfway house is being established just around the corner from our house and we are quite pleased that it will be there meeting needs.

But I am looking for some equalization on the east side to entice businesses that will bring much-needed jobs here.
