8 thoughts on “Do charter schools perform better than IPS schools? Here’s what studies, test results show.

  1. So, after reading this article, every metric says Charter Schools produce better outcomes. For less money. The “experts” then come in and say, but, maybe, and outdated. Well, there the best numbers we have, and it is clear that IPS is failing students. Why does anyone want to do backbends to justify anything else. If I’m a parent with the choice of IPS or a good Charter, the question is an easy one. The teacher’s union is not as important as the “Student Union”.

    1. Charter schools pick their students. If they couldn’t do that, they’d be an absolute laughingstock.

    1. I believe that Charles is referring to the prevailing view that charter schools select the students who are permitted to attend, rather than educating all comers from a given school district, and that if charter schools were simply educating all comers then the charter school results would make them a laughing stock.

  2. Ultimately the biggest factor in academic performance is the inherent cognitive ability of the student. It appears to be that there isn’t a ton of difference between traditional and charters, but the fact that large numbers of parents opt out of IPS is significant and shows dissatisfaction with how traditional schools are run or the students that charter parents would otherwise have to have their kids share space with.

  3. When The Mind Trust and the authors of these studies are willing to release the names of exactly which charter and district schools were compared in the studies, and for which school years, along with all of the data used in the studies, and submit the studies for the peer review by other academic researchers that is the hallmark for credible research, then we can begin to have a discussion on the merits of Indianapolis charter schools.

But despite repeated requests, none of that has happened.

  4. One size never fits all. Our kids all went to different schools throughout their formative years. Sometimes those were public schools, sometimes private, sometimes parochial. They all ended up graduating from a public high school. But I’m happy we had the means to send them where they needed to be at the time. I really don’t understand the charter school haters who seem to think that only people who can afford to make a choice should be allowed to make a choice.

And, by the way, significantly increased competition should spur these public schools to up their game. The fact they can’t or won’t speaks volumes.
