Sure, pair your spending cuts with a tax increase and I’ll believe you care about the deficit. You had all the levers of government just a few years ago and just blew up the deficit with that power. Otherwise, it’s quite clear that Republicans only care about deficits when there’s a Democratic president.
Turns out electing a bunch of unserious Republicans more interested in being social media superstars than effective governance has consequences.

I will never vote for a Republican for federal office again. They’ve proven time and time again they are incapable of leading.
Its not the leading that’s at issue. Its governing. The two are not the same. Governing assumes accepting roles in keeping the government running, and debating the future of that government in other than blackmail terms.
Threats of a government shut down is always a scare tactic used to get the other party to budge. It’s more costly to allow a shut down than to just fix the problem. This is ridiculous for both parties when there’s a war in Ukrain that’s funded by the USA but we’re threatened with a shut down. Government as a whole is hypocrisy at its finest.
Both parties are at fault and each is the problem. Democrats have largely controlled one or both chambers of Congress since the 40’s. Spending has continued to grow and grow along with federal intrusion. But, it’s also the fault of American voters for not demanding a workable budget that does not keep running up debt. FWIW, the older I get, the more convinced I become that the sooner you admit there is a problem and reach your rock bottom, the easier it is to actually solve your problem.
Neither side is actually interested in doing anything. They’ve already said they aren’t touching the vast majority of the budget – not Social Security, not Medicare, not the military.
Everything else is effectively window dressing. Trying to lose weight not by eating better or getting more exercise, but skipping the ketchup on your large fries and parking three spots further from the door.
Whether it’s Democrats spending more than they take in or Republicans refusing to collect enough to cover obligations, it’s equally bad. But only one party is negotiating like terrorists and threatening to shut down government or default on the debt if they don’t get their way. Like I said elsewhere, as soon as Republicans propose a tax increase to go with their spending cuts, or as soon as they actually care about the deficit at a time other than when a Democrat is the president, I’ll take them seriously.
I have no idea on earth how anyone can look at the last 20 years of governance and actually think the Republican Party cares one wit about deficits. All they care about is cutting taxes, then crying wolf when there’s not enough money coming in anymore. It’s very easy to fix that problem… they just don’t have the will to do it, and enough suckers still believe in trickle down economics anyway.

Interesting comments about Democrats in power. The ONLY years in which the budget was balanced were during the Clinton Administration. In all other years, didn’t matter who was in the White House, who ran Congress, the debt increased. The Republicans with the aid and comfort of Trump did a number on the budget. The Freedom Caucus isn’t really interested in spending cuts generally; they want to defund certain items, like prosecuting Trump, and allegedly doing something about the border issues. The latter are interesting to many US businesses, as restricting the flow of immigrants from Hispanic countries is driving up the costs of construction and food. Because that’s where roofers come from these days, and the folks who pick and process our food. Hurricane and other losses (fire, tornadoes, etc) will be more expensive because there are fewer crews to do the work, and they know it and so charge more. And the longer people have to rent homes because they can’t be back in their own home, the higher the costs. Higher insurance claim costs, higher premiums. My house had hail damage to siding in March 2021. Nothing to keep us out of the home, but allowed for rain to enter inside the siding, needed repair and required all four sides (coverage for which we had paid higher premium). December 2022, our insurer finally had crews and materials available. One week before Christmas. 21 months after the hail storm.
Complain all you want about immigrants at the southern border. Citizens and others already here are apparently unwilling to do these jobs. So let them in.
Really concerned about the debt? Then, as noted elsewhere in this thread, couple budget cuts with tax increases (say, on the corporations which just enjoyed tax cuts under the Trump Republicans and are now generally seeing record profits).
Actually, the only time the administration passed a balanced budget was when BOTH the Senate and House were controlled by Republicans, circa 1994 (with Newt Gingrich and the Contract with America).
And, many economists will tell you that Corporations do not pay taxes. The people pay the corporation’s taxes anyway, through higher prices.
The people need to stop asking government to solve problems. In my experience, government does not solve problems. It identifies (if not prolongs) problems.
When was the last time Congress passed the actual legislation compared to grand ideas Congress passed to administrative agencies to write the messy details? Perhaps if the Congressmen had to actually write the laws, they might get back in the habit of being legislators. Another thing they might try is voting without names attached to each vote. As it presently stands, it is a matter of party rules, where a holdout can exchange a vote for pork-barrel, or just a pet peeve. Final thought, Washington rightly became a huge money machine for World War II. So much they gave the excess not needed (that they took from us under penalty of jail) to give to anyone who came begging, from states to foreign countries. If the war is over, why have taxes gone up on the middle class. The old 90% on the uber-rich is gone, as is the 70% estate tax the rich paid. But middle class rates when you factor in the social security tax, which is double paid by employee and employer, plus the income tax itself, plus the state taxes, the middle class is getting a shellacking.
The indenture servants in Congress are beholden to the corporate lobbyist that fills their pockets with the cash they confiscate from our pockets either through taxation or inflation!
