Brilliant; it’ll be dark until 9am in the winter. Kids will be going to school in the dark.
Yes, my schoolbus driver friends in rural areas will hate this for the dangers it poses to their riders.
The solution is to make school start later. Studies show that school starts too soon anyway.
If this happens, let’s hope our legislature considers moving Indiana to Central Time. We are much closer to Chicago than NYC or Miami. And, people who watch scheduled shows will be able to get to bed an hour earlier. That can be super helpful for kids.
Yes, I’ve always hated DST! The biggest trick we humans have ever played on ourselves! Permanent should be standard time, not DST.
Think of our construction industry, and the service, supply, and manufacturing, not to mention farming and other agriculture related industries. They still have to get up and go to work. The extended morning darkness is only for the lazy and elite. The people that actually work for a living have to get up and get going. What’s next, move the work day from 10 AM to 7 PM to make the DST fair for half the population? If we live by the sun instead of the clock, then we’re all healthier and happier!
I’ve seen this movie before. I always ends the same way.
I’m with the put it back to standard time and leave it alone crowd, but that’s not happening. I also agree that we should be on central time as that is more consistent with our location, but again, not happening. Too many people like it being light until 10pm in the summer, but not me. I honestly don’t see what would be wrong with experimenting with different variations for 5 years and then taking a national vote to pick. I spent many years plugging for the change here in 2006 and after a few years decided I didn’t like it at all. The only thing I wanted at the time was consistency with the rest of the country for business, but didn’t understand how long it would take my body to adjust each spring to the change. No matter what we decide on I don’t like changing back and forth and would prefer that stop.
I agree with Patrick O. If we go to permanent DST, then Indiana needs to switch to Central Time. This may also force some places like Maine and northern New England to Atlantic Time, like some of eastern Canada. Other locations will also want to switch time zones. Would it not be easier just to eliminate DST altogether and have states move to new time zones then if needed.
Moving Indiana to Central time, regardless of whether or not this passes, is a bad idea. 4-5pm sunsets are way too early in the winter. Studies show that students and workers alike would benefit from later start times.
Why not just use UTC or Zulu time?
