Groups like The Hoosier Environmental Council are a perfect example of why Indiana lags behind our peers in economic development and retaining talent in the state. These groups are outdated and use fear tactics to justify their position. You have to look at what’s the driving force behind the economic boom we see in Nashville, Raleigh, Austin, Charlotte and even Columbus Ohio. Each of these cities are considered Indys peers but all have surpassed Indy. Indy has done a good job with sporting events and conventions but if the city is going to stay ahead, let alone even competitive, Indy must change its mindset on how its currently doing business and if so many regulations are truly needed. It’s obvious that too much regulations can stunt the cities growth. Indy needs to understand that it has to diversify its economy and not put too many eggs in one basket incase there’s a shift in the economy and we haven’t transitioned to keep up with the times. This is exactly why so many manufacturing jobs left cities like Anderson, Gary and others cause those cities didn’t have a diverse economy.
Perhaps the reason Indiana lags behind 43 other states in entrepreneurship is the possibility that Hoosiers by nature are not risk takers, big thinkers, or aspirational. Thinking that the state’s already minimal regulations on small business is the problem is likely barking up the wrong tree.
When will Indiana end the idiotic cold beer monopoly? I cannot believe that the Legislature doesn’t have this on their agenda.
