This sounds like a very different Indiana than BSU professor Mike Hicks describes. By his statistical measures, Indiana is losing ground to many if not most other states. According to Hicks, our teachers are compensated as though they are part-time workers (which with a 180 day a year contract some would argue that is exactly what they are). We are also in decline as other, more financially capable states, are subsidizing Hoosiers who enjoy more federal tax dollars disbursed to Indiana than we send to Washington. Stupid me, I thought all this money is just money Washington D.C. was printing. Of course Hicks did not identify the 11 states that subsidize Indiana. Hicks is relentless in criticizing Indiana leadership. He favors higher taxes and more government, and he knows all the academic arguments to back up his positions. Hard to believe that privately managed and financed railroads can be contributing much to the well being of not only Hoosiers, but the nation as a whole. The audacity of Buckley and Mills! How could anything productive and worthwhile be of any value without complete and total government intervention?
Amtrak is a colossal failure and the taxpayer of the United States never or rarely use the services, subsidize every single Amtrak passenger to the tune of $66.00 per ticket. Private funded RR may be viable but Amtrak needs to cover it costs or go private to get the efficiencies required. I understand Mr. Buckley’s vested interest since the majority of BG’s budget is the Amtrak taxes. But is this really viable long-term with a nation that is $ 28,119,000,000,000.00 in debt.
