  1. Dr. Jack Wittman IS a “local hydrologist” and IU PhD who actually specializes in “this”. He is a recognized expert in groundwater hydrology and modeling and we’re lucky he’s a Hoosier.

    1. He also was contracted by the IEDC and the study was under their direction. The IEDC has proven that they can not be trusted, refuse to be transparent, and do not have the interests of Hoosiers as their top priority. They will craft the narrative to whatever they want it to be to get their way. Neutral third party studies are needed that go beyond just the rate/volume that can be taken by the aquifer.

    2. “Neutral third party studies” should say exactly the rate and volume that can be sustainably withdrawn from the aquifer…that’s what hydrologists do. It’s science, not politics.

      The legislature can and should weigh in on the subject of “inter-basin transfers”, although taking water from one part of the Wabash watershed and moving it to another branch of the same watershed isn’t quite as egregious as moving water from, say, the Great Lakes watershed to the Mississippi basin (which is banned by treaty). That’s definitely a political decision and not science.

      Also, note that Dr. Wittman so far has indicated sustainable withdrawal of only about 40 mgd (if I am recalling the stories correctly) based on his test results and modeling. That’s a far cry from “crafting the narrative”…I’d say he’s telling it like it is.

  2. There may be science behind this, but it is political. What is going to happen when the next big ticket development comes calling with their version of science from their expert. This is like the camel’s nose under the tent. I’m with the commissioners on this one.

    What a waste of time. Classic Indiana GOP.

    1. Indiana does not regulate the ownership of water like other states. Water in the Wabash River and the aquifers below are considered a state resource – not a local one.

  4. Anyone who doesn’t believe this is about science and politics doesn’t understand the core issues at hand. I can respect the fact that some political leaders are trying to make sure the water supply in these communities aren’t contaminated from the absence of regulated waste dumping ect. Indiana doesn’t want what happened in Flint Michigan to happen here, I get it but at the same time Indiana was chosen by the government and the private sector as a tech location for electric batteries, hydrogen fuel and chip manufacturing ect. It’s like a double edge sword folks. Either Indiana wants to grow for the next centuries and beyond or sit idle and let other states jump at the opportunities Indiana has historically been too reluctant to grab. Indiana’s conservative views sometimes gets in the way and stunts the states growth and ability to retain and attract talent let alone economic investments from out of state. We can’t have it both ways people. There’s some who no longer see Indiana as fly over country.

    1. Of course. Water almost always flows uphill to money.

      By definition someone’s going to get paid to design and build the collection (well drilling) and transmission (pipeline) system that delivers it, as well as the sewer system that it discharges to.
