    1. Especially doesn’t seem quite right when one considers that AI will wipe out humanity in the next decade or so.

  1. Absolutely zero reasons to give away this level of tax incentives when the city/county circles the drain and needs to pass a wheel tax to maintain the roads. The article fails to cover how water/utiliity costs will be dealt with. In the current climate of bans and moratoriums why are we giving locations away? Vote them out.

  2. The most important part of the article is as follows:

“ Pat Andrews, land use chair for the Decatur Township Civic Council, said Sabey clearly intended to move forward with the project even without the tax savings. It is standard to judge tax abatements with the “but for” standard, which says abatements are necessary if a project couldn’t happen “but for” the incentives.”

Thank you to Commissioner Schumacher for recognizing this to be a massive handout in the backs of taxpayers and voting against it.

  3. I listened today online. This Sabey firm will be the 2nd largest taxpayer in the City and investing $4B. I assume Lilly is #1. Wow….We need more union jobs and investments like this from new companies instead of new wheel taxes and higher property taxes. The IEDI executive was so professional compared to the Decatur lady who kept repeating herself over and over and over about “GRAVY”…It is not even Thanksgiving yet.

    1. Now tell us how many people Lilly employs in this state vs Sabey. Maybe they’d be the largest taxpayer in the state if we didn’t offer them these massive handouts!

    1. Mickey D’s might provide 75 jobs, 60 of which are minimum wage and the rest “salaried” managers at barely above minimum. Nowhere near $50/hour. Plus construction and installation of equipment will employ a large number of high-wage union construction and electrical workers (who might be coming off other huge union jobs like the IU Health Hospital, airport hotel, etc.).

  4. More tax breaks for billionaires. We are giving them $240 million in tax breaks and they are going to re-invest a whopping 45 million with a 50k contribution to the Arts Council? That seems random.

“Sabey has also committed to spending millions of dollar on community benefit projects as an “inclusion plan” requirement to receive incentives. The inclusion plan calls for a guaranteed $29.8 million investment but could go up to $39.8 million.

The company will provide financing for an aquatic center and a $5 million payment for nearby roads. Westrick Brown also said the company would make a $50,000 contribution to The Arts Council of Indianapolis. “

    1. It might be helpful to understand how the tax abatement process works….they are still paying taxes and adding the township’s NAV. It will allow the community/Decatur Township schools some breathing room and not look to taxpayers to cover future incremental costs. This is a positive for the township and county.
Who are the billionaires, Heather? Specifically, who?

    1. Pat Andrews said:
“The schools aren’t getting extra gravy. The fire department and other services from the township—they aren’t getting any gravy.”
She then urged the MDC to “deny the abatement.” It occurs around 41:12 in the official MDC recording.
I overheard someone on the circle today saying “I’m shocked that she represents Decatur as her comments do not make sense and she didn’t let other speak for the county”

  5. Remember that these local property tax breaks are in addition to the significant sales tax breaks on the equipment provided by the State. Thank your IN legislature.

  6. Funny reading all the the comments on data centers… in social media that runs in these data centers and AI providing the “facts” for the arguments against. The world we live in these days…

  7. I find it quite curious that our elected leaders no longer seem to care about pollution, health & safety, or the environment now that DCs are on the scene. Not to mention the blatant discrimination evidenced by which neighborhoods they are willing to sacrifice by building in certain areas and decapitating the contribution of tax revenue for so long.
Sure, it’s some temporary construction jobs… but that is not worth the price the locals will pay over the long term.
