For more than four decades, Harrell-Fish (HFI) has delivered mechanical construction, renovation, and service work for some of Indiana’s most essential facilities. Founded in Bloomington in 1985, HFI has grown into a regional leader providing HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical solutions for healthcare, pharmaceutical, higher education, institutional, data center, and industrial clients—while staying rooted in the values that built the company.

Today, HFI generates more than $300M in revenue and operates from Bloomington, Indianapolis, and Evansville, with 750+ skilled professionals supporting projects across Indiana and beyond. Growth is guided by a simple purpose: to make a difference for employees, clients, the industry, and the community as a great, enduring company.

In Indianapolis, HFI’s expanding presence reflects both market demand and long-term investment in Indiana communities. The team supports some of the region’s largest and most complex healthcare and institutional projects, including work associated with the downtown IU Health mega campus—one of the most significant healthcare construction efforts in state history.

In Evansville, HFI is a proven industrial contractor supporting large-scale manufacturing, process, and infrastructure work. The company serves long-standing clients—including Toyota—where reliability, safety, and technical expertise are essential. These operations help strengthen southwestern Indiana’s industrial base and regional economy.

“These projects require technical excellence, strong partnerships, and a safety-first approach,” said Steve Dawson, CEO of HFI. “They play to HFI’s strengths.”

To support continued growth, HFI entered a strategic partnership in December 2025 with New State Capital Partners, a private equity firm experienced in supporting founder-led and family-owned businesses in the facility services sector. The partnership was structured intentionally: HFI’s ownership team retained significant equity and remains actively involved in leadership, helping ensure stability for employees and clients. “We are contractor-led and PE-backed,” Dawson said. “They believed in our track record and are investing to help us grow our brand and platform. Culture is at the heart of everything we do.”

In April 2026, HFI acquired Eco-Friendly Mechanical, a Bloomington-based contractor known for sustainable, energy-efficient HVAC and plumbing work. The acquisition strengthens HFI’s Bloomington footprint and expands its energy-efficiency capabilities while reinforcing its southern Indiana roots and commitment to the community. Eco-Friendly Mechanical shares HFI’s focus on craftsmanship, customer relationships, and community involvement.

Together, these moves position HFI to scale across Indiana and the Midwest without losing its identity.

Safety is foundational to HFI’s culture—not a check-the-box requirement, but a personal responsibility shared by every employee, from leadership to the field.

That commitment has earned national recognition: HFI has received the Mechanical Contractors Association of America Safety Excellence Award, reflecting sustained investment in training, accountability, and engaged leadership. At HFI, strong safety performance goes hand in hand with operational excellence.

HFI’s people-first mindset extends beyond the jobsite. The company has been recognized as one of Indiana’s Best Places to Work, highlighting its commitment to employee development, leadership accessibility, and workplace culture. “This is the third year in a row we have been honored with this award. Our employee satisfaction metrics are over 94%, and that helps us recruit and retain top talent. We want our employees to know their efforts matter, and they have a voice in the company,” Dawson said.

Team members benefit from structured career paths, mentorship, competitive benefits, and an environment that encourages collaboration and long-term growth. Many build decades-long careers with HFI—a testament to a culture designed to endure as the company grows.

HFI is committed not only to its own success but also to advancing the mechanical contracting industry. Employees serve on 18 national and statewide boards, committees, and professional organizations, helping shape standards, workforce development initiatives, and best practices—strengthening the skilled-trades pipeline and developing future leaders beyond any single project.

HFI’s impact reaches beyond construction sites. Over the years, the company has donated more than $1 million to nonprofits, schools, and community organizations across Indiana. Its largest philanthropic initiative supports Riley Children’s Hospital, a unifying cause across HFI’s offices.

Dawson serves on the Riley Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Governors, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to the mission.

“Riley is an incredibly important hospital for all of Indiana,” Dawson said. “Riley continues to make a difference for our people and our families.”

The focus reflects HFI’s belief that successful businesses should invest meaningfully in the communities they serve.

This year, HFI celebrated its 41st anniversary, marking more than four decades of trust, relationships, and consistent performance. The vision extends beyond short-term success.

“Our goal isn’t simply growth,” Dawson said. “It’s to build something that lasts for our 750 families who rely on us.”

With strong leadership, strategic partners, expanded capabilities, and a clear purpose, HFI looks ahead with confidence—working toward a future where it leaves Indiana and the region better than it found it.
