I don’t see how a misdemeanor conviction is a felony conviction. The charge was a felony, but the conviction was a misdemeanor.
If this is trick, then it’s a good one, right from Putin’s playbook and very effective. I seem to remember reading stories about Russians doing the same thing to stifle Putin opposition candidates.
