Tax-sale bidders pass on Winona

The vacant Winona Memorial Hospital attracted no bidders at the Marion County treasurer’s tax sale late last week.

The property, at 3232 N. Meridian St., comes with a tax lien of about $1 million. Treasurer Mike Rodman will put it back on the list for a sale Jan. 16. If the hospital attracts no bidders at the next tax sale, it will become county property after a 120-day waiting period.

The fate of the defunct hospital, which closed and filed for bankruptcy in 2004, is of particular interest to its southern neighbor, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

The museum already has bought a parking lot that had been part of the Winona complex. It’s also helping to pay for an environmental assessment on the site, which is more than one acre.
