Officers to crack down on drunken boaters

June 22, 2010

Indiana conservation officers will be on the lookout for drunken boaters this weekend. The Department of Natural Resources said the state is taking part in Operation Dry Water. Conservation officers will be paid overtime through a grant from the U.S. Coast Guard. State conservation officers made 15 boating-while-intoxicated arrests during last year's operation. The DNR made 101 such arrests during the 2009 boating season. The Coast Guard says 17 percent of boating deaths result directly from alcohol or drug use.
