Pennsy Trail will grow to 5.3 miles
The City of Greenfield will double the size of the Pennsy Trail, a 2.6-mile recreational trail atop former Pennsylvania Railroad bed that runs east-west, south of downtown Greenfield.
Last month the city was awarded an $800,000 grant under the “Hoosiers on the Move” statewide trails plan. It will pay for a 2.7-mile extension to the west, toward Eli Lilly and Co.’s Elanco animal health division.
“We hope to have the pavement on the ground by November of this year,” said Tracy Doyle, head of Greenfield’s department of parks and recreation.
The grant will extend the Greenfield stretch of Pennsy to 5.3 miles. It’s part of a larger, 150-mile National Road Heritage Trail Route stretching east-west across the state from Richmond to Terre Haute. Cur
rently there are about 25 miles of trail open, with the 2008 state grants extending that to 35 miles.
