SHELBY COUNTY New use for casino pavilion?

The temporary facility that now houses the Indiana Live! Casino could become an entertainment fixture in Shelbyville.

Don’t worry, the slot machines and blackjack tables will move, as planned, into their permanent, 233,000-square-foot, “Vegasstyle” home in early 2009.

But officials of the casino’s owner, Indiana Downs LLC, are talking about using the 70,000-square-foot temporary pavilion-or the land it sits on-for some other purpose, said Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson.

What that will be isn’t clear. Indiana Downs officials aren’t talking.

But that hasn’t stopped rumors from circulating. The strongest one has been that California-based Live Nation, owner of the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Fishers, will build an outdoor concert venue in Shelbyville.

Furgeson said the rumors of a concert venue are unfounded.

“That sounds like a great idea,” he said of the rumor about Live Nation. “But, again, we haven’t had that conversation with those people.”

The casino site, on land adjacent to the Indiana Downs horse track, already includes a 5,000-seat outdoor concert venue.

The temporary casino facility is surrounded by 100 acres on the Indiana Downs property, which is half the acreage that surrounds the large amphitheater at Verizon Wireless Music Center.
