TIPPECANOE COUNTY Plant gets grinding

British food and industrial ingredients company Tate & Lyle has been assessed two civil penalties totaling $247,941 involving the company’s wet corn milling facility along North Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette. It was formerly known as the A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. Sagamore plant.

The penalties resulted from two settlements signed July 25 between the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Tate & Lyle Ingredients Americas, involving the company’s cereal sweeteners and starch division.

The agreed orders do not constitute an admission of violations.

The penalties stemmed from findings the plant exceeded a 40-ton-per-year limit for sulfur dioxide emissions for 1997 and 1998 and 2000-2004.

The state also alleged the plant did not comply with environmental rules involving two steam-generating units.
