Truce called in annexation fight
Greenwood and Bargersville officials have called off the dogs in their fight over the right to annex parts of the Center Grove area in Johnson County. At least for now.
After Bargersville officials forwarded a compromise Oct. 2, Greenwood officials halted their plans to quickly annex the land in question before Bargersville could. Officials for both sides have now agreed to sit down to hammer out an agreement.
Bargersville and Greenwood officials in September both announced plans to annex the same two square miles northeast of Whiteland Road and State Road 135, north to Stones Crossing Road. Bargersville officials said they’d be willing to split the parcel with Greenwood.
At issue is property tax revenue the land generates, an amount that’s growing as developers move in. Bargersville had said it wanted to annex that part of the land already served by town sewers and property where owners consent to annexation.
Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson confirmed Oct. 13 that city officials would delay immediate plans to annex land until an agreement can be ironed out with Bargersville. Henderson added that city officials favored compromise over a potential legal action, which could draw out the process even further.
