Heritage-Crystal Clean started full production in late January at its used oil re-refinery in Speedway.

The company says the re-refinery is the second-largest in the United States. It has capacity to recycle 50 million gallons of oil per year and produce 30 million gallons of lubricating base oil.

Heritage-Crystal Clean planned to complete the project on West 10th Street in mid-2012, but moved up the construction schedule by several months. The company ended up investing $54 million in what was initially announced as a $40 million project.

CEO Joe Chalhoub said he expects to be running at full capacity by 2013.

Heritage-Crystal Clean, based in Elgin, Ill., was founded in Indianapolis 20 years ago before moving its headquarters. The company has more than 500 employees at 62 locations in the Midwest and along the East Coast. It specializes in collecting oil from automotive-service and manufacturing customers.
