Star wars? That phrase had a different meaning back in the golden age of Hollywood when the rivalry between screen divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford was no secret. Both were given a rare (and grotesque) opportunity to play out that rivalry in this 1962 film. Critics sometimes talk about “brave” performances in movies. But you won’t find many braver than that of Bette Davis who, at a point when her career was in the dumps, plays a former child star in a way that redefined “over the top.” For extra fun on the IMA terrace, serve your picnic on a tray with covered dishes.
