Boy arrested in hammer-related shooting

Police say a 12-year-old Columbus boy hit a bullet cartridge with a hammer, firing a bullet that grazed a teenage girl. Columbus police Sgt. Matt Harris says the boy was playing with the live ammunition Wednesday night when he hit the cartridge on a sidewalk. The blow from the hammer ignited the primer and gunpowder. The 15-year-old girl told officers she was walking with friends when she heard the boy tell two other boys riding bicycles nearby to "watch this." She then felt something hit her neck. An ambulance was not called, but officers suggested she go to the hospital for an evaluation. The boy was taken to a juvenile detention center on a criminal recklessness charge.
