Former city official takes top job at Indiana ACLU

A former Indianapolis deputy mayor is the new executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana.

The ACLU said Jane Henegar will begin working full time Sept. 4. She succeeds Gilbert Holmes, who retired March 31.

Henegar was Indianapolis' deputy mayor from 2000 to 2006 under then-Mayor Bart Peterson and served as state director for former Sen. Evan Bayh. She also has held posts in the state Department of Administration and the Family and Social Services Administration.

After leaving city government, Henegar led the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention and taught political science at Butler University. The Bloomington native holds a law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.
