The Dow dropped 332 points, to 7,949, its first close below 8,000 since Nov. 20.
Continuing problems in the banking industry took a toll on major indexes, with the S&P 500 falling 5.3 percent, to 805.2, and the NASDAQ composite sliding 5.8 percent, to 1,440.9.
