WellPoint Inc., the nation's second-largest health insurer, has picked two health care consulting executives for its board of directors.

The Indianapolis company said Tuesday that John Short and Elizabeth Tallett will join its 11-member board Wednesday and Oct. 1, respectively.

Short is a principal with the health care consulting firm Short Consulting LLC and was the CEO of RehabCare Group, a publicly traded rehabilitation services provider acquired by Kindred Healthcare Inc. in 2011.

Tallett is a principal with another consultant, Hunter & Partners LLC. She also served as a lead director for Coventry Health Care, an insurer acquired earlier this year by WellPoint competitor Aetna Inc.

In May, WellPoint named Lewis Hay III, executive chairman of NextEra Energy Inc., to its board. Earlier that month, it had said three long-standing board members — Sheila P. Burke, Dr. Lenox D. Baker Jr. and Susan B. Bayh — had left for personal reasons.

WellPoint provides Blue Cross-Blue Shield plans in several states and covers about 35.7 million people. It trails only UnitedHealth Group Inc. in terms of enrollment.

Shares of WellPoint closed at $89.10 each on Monday and have jumped 46 percent so far this year.
