The founder of an Indianapolis-based program aimed at reducing summer learning losses among schoolchildren has won a $50,000 grant from the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation.

Earl Martin Phalen received the grant at an awards dinner Thursday evening in Indianapolis. He was selected to win the grant by former Cummins Inc. chairman and chief executive Tim Solso after Solso was selected the winner of the first biennial Mitch Daniels Leadership Prize last month.

Under the prize program, winners of the prize select an individual or organization who best embodies Daniels' values to receive the grant.

Solso was chosen by an eight-member committee that included former Indiana Chief Justice Randall Shepard, former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton; former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan and Vera Bradley founder Pat Miller.
