Indiana University is No. 1 in the Big Ten with its @IUBloomington Twitter account.
The Herald-Times reports more than 81,000 followers subscribe to the account to keep track of a mix of news and entertainment.
University spokesman Mark Land says social media can be used for "community building." It encourages newly accepted students to snap a picture of the acceptance envelope and post the picture to Twitter. IU will then "retweet" and share their celebratory post with the Hoosier Nation.
Officials at IU are looking for new ways to expand the university's social media presence.
IU has moved into the image-focused medium with Instagram, and the @IUBloomington account ranked fifth in followers and third for user engagement. The university also has more than 23,000 followers on the site Pinterest.
