Hundreds of volunteers are expected to participate in this Saturday’s Rebuilding Together Indianapolis program – a charitable effort to restore 20 homes on the near-southeast side of the city.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Wishard Health Services CEO Lisa Harris and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Spears will be among those attending the event, which begins at 7:30 a.m.

This is the 10th year for the event in which volunteers work on a variety of homebuilding tasks, including carpentry, plumbing and electrical projects.

Support for the event has grown from 250 volunteers rehabbing 10 homes in 2000 to 750 volunteers refurbishing 26 homes last year. The effort raised more than $150,000 in local corporate donations in 2008.

Improvements this year will be made in the Southeast Neighborhood Development, which is bordered by Madison Avenue, and Prospect, Shelby and Raymond streets.

The Washington, D.C.-based Rebuild Together is a not-for-profit that provides assistance to homeowners who are unable to afford home-repair costs. The organization operates in more than 2,000 cities in all 50 states and has helped about 570,000 people since its inception.
