Hallador Energy to lay off 175 Indiana coal miners

A coal company has laid off 175 employees as it consolidated its operations in Sullivan County.

Hallador Energy Co. announced the layoffs Monday affecting Sunrise Coal's mines in Carlisle and Oaktown, both about 90 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

Denver-based Hallador, which owns Sunrise, says it has modified some of its supply contracts for customers who purchased too much coal amid mild weather this year and a glut of natural gas. It says it expects the Oaktown mine to produce more than 90 percent of Sunrise's coal for the next few years. Most of the coal is sold to the electric power generation industry.

Hallador says some of the Carlisle mine's employees are transferring to the Oaktown mine.
