Fort Wayne Foundry Corp. notified state officials this week that it will close a plant in Fort Wayne and another in nearby Columbia City, leaving 461 workers jobless.

The company plans to close the plants by the end of the month. The Fort Wayne machining division employs 174 and the Columbia City division 287.

The company makes aluminum engine parts and said the cuts are due to the downturn in the automotive industry. The big blow came late last month when General Motors Corp. notified the foundry that the automaker no longer could afford its products and would search for other suppliers.

Fort Wayne Foundry’s parent is Cole Pattern & Engineering Co. Inc., also based in Fort Wayne.
