Dr. Virginia Caine, director of the Marion County Health Department, has been named Watanabe Life Sciences Champion of the Year, an honor named after the late Dr. August Watanabe, former chairman of BioCrossroads, an Indianapolis-based life-sciences organization that presents the award.

Caine was honored for advocating for better health care and leading efforts to establish the county’s first HIV dental clinic and the first countywide HIV/AIDS integrated health care delivery system involving major hospitals, community health centers and social service agencies.

As co-director of the Indianapolis Healthy Babies Initiative, Caine worked with community leaders to reduce a record-level black infant mortality rate to its lowest level in city history.

She has served on committees for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In 2004, she served as president of the American Public Health Association.•
