Robust international sales give Cummins big boost

Diesel-engine maker Cummins Inc. got a big boost from international markets in 2017.

It was a banner year for the Columbus-based company overall, with North American sales rising 15 percent and international sales climbing 19 percent. Driving the gains were strong demand for trucks, construction and mining equipment.

China continued to be a stand-out market. Cummins said demand for medium- and heavy-duty trucks in that country increased 40 percent in 2017, in part because government enforcement of vehicle-overloading regulations accelerated truck replacements.•
