Indianapolis-based wireless phone distributor Brightpoint Inc. has appointed Tom Ridge, the first secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to its board of directors, the company announced this morning.

Ridge is currently president and CEO of Washington, D.C.-based Ridge Global, a security consulting firm.

“Tom Ridge brings a significant amount of additional depth and experience to the board, and I am delighted that he is joining us,” said Robert J. Laikin, chairman and CEO of Brightpoint, in a prepared statement. “His expertise in risk management and global trade security are particularly valuable to Brightpoint and our vendors and customers.”

Ridge was twice elected governor of Pennsylvania before leaving during his second term in 2001 to direct Homeland Security.
