Another downtown intersection closed for utility repairs

Attention commuters: Another major downtown intersection has been closed because of problems with the underlying sewer system.

Citizens Energy Group announced Thursday afternoon that the intersection of Illinois and Maryland streets will be closed “indefinitely.”

The utility said the brick manhole structure under the street, which is more than 100 years old, has collapsed. Citizens said it discovered the collapse during routine sewer cleaning and inspection.

Citizens also was forced to close the busy intersection of Ohio and Pennsylvania streets to repair a century-old sewer line that collapsed 15 feet beneath the surface. Those repairs lasted from July 4 to July 13.

Citizens said it would provide updates on the current situation as repairs progress.
