Job numbers increased 1.6 percent in the Indianapolis area in January from the same month last year, according to new figures from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The region, which includes Marion and surrounding counties as well as Brown and Putnam counties, had 911,200 jobs.

The increase was broad, as categories ranging from transportation to hospitality to business and professional services all posted gains.

Contributing some of the largest increases were employment services, 2,500 jobs; health care and social work, 5,000; and specialty trade construction, 1,100.

The figures are not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, thus are best compared with the same month in prior years.

After sputtering briefly during recession early in the decade, the Indianapolis area has maintained a slow, steady rate of growth.
