Rolls-Royce engine contract could save jobs

March 7, 2007

A contract Rolls-Royce Corp. has landed to supply helicopter engines to Robinson Helicopter Co. of Torrance, Calif., isn’t likely to create jobs at Rolls-Royce’s facility in Indianapolis.

But the deal to supply several hundred gas turbine engines in coming years likely saved at least some positions, said Rolls-Royce spokesman George McLaren.

Rolls-Royce views the contract as a coup because Robinson is the largest maker of light-duty models used by such buyers as private individuals, corporations and television stations. It is the first time Robinson has used a non-piston engine.

The RR300 engine, which will be produced beginning next year, has 300 horsepower and will be used in a Robinson R66 five-seat model.
