But the deal to supply several hundred gas turbine engines in coming years likely saved at least some positions, said Rolls-Royce spokesman George McLaren.
Rolls-Royce views the contract as a coup because Robinson is the largest maker of light-duty models used by such buyers as private individuals, corporations and television stations. It is the first time Robinson has used a non-piston engine.
The RR300 engine, which will be produced beginning next year, has 300 horsepower and will be used in a Robinson R66 five-seat model.
